What is this thing called MOMS?

Welcome!
to the
Sacramento area's
Ministry of Mothers Sharing (MOMS)

What is MOMS? A national Catholic ministry dedicated to providing a nurturing and supportive place for mothers to grow personally and spiritually.  It is an outreach ministry of the Sisters of St. Benedict at St. Paul's Monastery in MN, and has been active in various parishes around the Sacramento Diocese for over 10 years.

Is MOMS for me?  MOMS is for mothers of all ages and stages of life. Are you looking for ways to find women you can connect with on a spiritual level? Do you want to feel connected to the families you sit next to in Church every Sunday? Are you an exhausted mother who feels isolated at home? Are you wanting to grow spiritually? Are you feeling lost since the kids left for college? Then MOMS is for you!

Why MOMS? Because MOMS provides a safe, gentle, loving place to grow. MOMS accepts you for who you are... wherever you are... and says, "Come, walk with me. Let's laugh, cry, share, and grow together."  Through this growth and support, mothers begin to recognize and appreciate motherhood as a sacred role and ministry. Past MOMS participants have noticed that when they have an outlet of their very own, their families become stronger, their lives a bit less harried, and their step a little bit lighter.

What's the MOMS Mission? The purpose of MOMS is to provide mothers with the spark, or the first step towards recognizing that motherhod is a ministry; the first step towards becoming a part of their parish community, and the first step towards learning more about their faith. Many mothers who have gone through the ministry say they appreciated the ministry's gentle first step towards their faith: a personal and spiritual growth process that empowered them to get in touch with their "inner sacred self" and discover their God-given gifts and call to serve. As a result, mothers across the Sacramento area are joining and starting new bible studies and faith formation ministries they say they never would have joined if it weren't for MOMS empowering them with a renewed sense of their spirituality.

  History of
Ministry of Mothers Sharing (MOMS)

MOMS was created by the Sisters of St. Benedict within St. Paul's Monastery in Minnesota. It is now endorsed in over 100 dioceses. The seeds of the ministry began in 1986, when Sister Paula Hagen of the Sisters of St. Benedict was teaching a Parents Baptismal Preparation class as part of her responsibilities in Family Ministry at St. Timothy Parish in Arizona. She met a large number of parents, having their children baptized, who said they felt no connection to Christ in the Eucharist and did not feel like they really belonged to the parish. So she co-created “Mothers of Young Children’s Spiritual Support Group” with a group of mothers. The motivation was to offer mothers more help in establishing daily prayer and prayer rituals with their families.

The class answered a need and grew into MOMS. MOMS became an adult spiritual formation experience that has inspired hundreds of thousands of mothers to make a commitment to daily personal prayer, prayer as a couple, and the establishment of family prayer rituals and traditions. Many pastors across the United States have endorsed MOMS because they have seen these families become more involved in family spirituality and their local parish. Since 1992, MOMS has touched over 500,000 women and their families.
